The Ibanez guitar-line started in 1929 when Hoshino Gakki, a music instrument company in Japan, started to import Salvador Ibañez guitars from Spain. When the Spanish guitar maker closed due to Spanish Civil War, the Hoshino Gakki company bought the brand name and rights of the Ibañez brand and they started to manufacture acoustic and Spanish guitars and used the name Ibanez.
The Ibanez brand became well known by the time it started to manufacture copies of other guitar brands such a Gibson and Fender. This period in the history of Ibanez vintage guitars was also well known as the lawsuit period. Lawsuits started to diminish when Hoshino Gakki began to produce their own Ibanez brands and not copies from other brands. This was the time when the Ibanez Iceman and Roadstar started to enter the market. From then on, the company started to produce their own guitar designs.
The 80’s up to the 90’s became the most significant time for the Ibanez vintage guitars. The company’s team up with Steve Vai, Frank Zappa’s guitarist, started the release of some popular models of Ibanez vintage guitars such as the Ibanez JEM an the Ibanez Universe.
Other models started to emerge and became well-known in the whole music industry. The Japanese company became popular even in the western countries including the United States of America and the countries in Europe.
From the day the Ibanez vintage guitars entered the mainstream music industry, various artists became witnesses on the greatness of the music these guitars provided.
George Benson, a Grammy-award winning artist, was a loyal user of Ibanez guitars. He also became the endorser of the Ibanez GB model.
The lead guitarist of System of a Down, Daron Malakian, also played an Ibanez vintage guitar. The models Malakian played fashioned artworks made by his father.
Another well known rock guitarist who had collaborated with various artists such as Mick Jagger and Alice Cooper, Joe Satriani, played a signature model by Ibanez, the JS series.
Korn’s lead guitarist, James Chaffer, also used a signature model of Ibanez. He played the Ibanez Apex which was one of the models Ibanez was proud of.
Mick Thompson of Slipknot also owned a custom-made Ibanez vintage guitar.
As mentioned a while ago, Steve Vai was also a popular Ibanez guitar user. He was also once a designer of Ibanez guitars. He designed the Universe and JEM series of the brand. Vai played in the band of Frank Zappa, David Lee Roth and Meatloaf.
Brian Head Welch of Korn played an Ibanez vintage guitar throughout his career, with the band and his solo career.
Also, the bassist of the popular disco band Earth, Wind and Fire, played a signature bass guitar from Ibanez.
